Improve video quality
I know you're trying to conserve disk space and bandwidth, but I always thought that the extra low quality of some videos was due to the uploader or source. But then I uploaded a video of my own, in crystal clear 720p, and after waiting like a week for publication it's a horrible almost unwatchable pixelated mess - it kept the high resolution, but gave it an average bitrate of just ~575kbit/second! A competing site uses ~850kbit/second for just 480p resolution!

It always used to be fine, then this year 2020 around march I found as Jon K commented below it took a while for each vid to reach quality, the last couple of months it doesn't improve however long the video is. I'm surprised there's not more comments on here about it, or anywhere on the web.
If they xhampster intentional reduced i would have thought there would be an announcement perhaps saying only premium members got good quality. I'm beginning to wonder if its my pc but utube is still fine.... -

The video quality is HORRIBLE. I mean it'd REDICULOUS. There's NO excuse. Videos on this site are the WORST OF ANY PORN SITE ON THE INTERNET. SOOOOO BAD...IT IS NOT EVEN WORTH WATCHING. I would rather NOT watch a video I can only find here, than to have to lower my standard to TRASH... So much to insult with this topic. CLOSE the site. Pure CRAP!

you right, xhamster tries taking you to the best quality possible to stream without interruption, but yes, it starts from the very bottom, and it can take like 10s to go to 720p, wich is annoying af.
Ideally, xhamster should saveyour video quality pref into your profile and if that quality is not available in certain videos, it should default to the next one below. but it should never ever start streaming from 240p if you set in your settings to default to 720p. am I right? -

Need to improve video quality. I will no longer upload HD videos for the site to only show them in poor quality 480p.

I realize that now - but honestly I had expected xHamster to reduce my video to whatever the maximum resolution they supported was, since there are no posted guidelines besides a maximum file size. What would have happened had I posted a 1080p file?
However, even if I reduce to 480p or 360p, is there any guarantee that the system will maintain at least a 600kbit bitrate at that lower frame size? I've checked out a few other low quality videos and have seen bitrates barely exceeding 100kbit/second, while some others seem much higher.
How can I ensure the best possible quality on xHamster? Are there any file types or characteristics that won't trigger a re-encode?

An interim solution might be to reduce your frame size somewhat.
