Why can't we open individual pictures to public or friends rather than the whole gallery
I would like to open individual pictures to public or friends whilst still being able to keep some of the gallery private

The answer to your question in the suggestion title is ........ clearly the senior management didn't think of that when they designed the system.
The work around is to have a public gallery, a friends gallery and a private gallery. Put your images in the relevant gallery.
