It would be nice to know if the pvt msgs you send have been opened by the recipient
Perhaps a check mark that appears before the msg when the recipient opens it

This already exists. The symbol (letter) changes when the message has been opened.

Instead of the 1st line of the message you could add the date and time the last msg was sent. That way they would have to open the msgs to read them, and the sender could be notified. Not including the opening in short msgs would require them to open them.
